Is this legal?
This is not the government teaching the Bible. It receives no government funding. The classes are held off government property and no government entity determines the biblical content of the classes. The public school system merely allows the students with parental permission to voluntarily choose to take a privately offered class. These programs have routinely withstood any court challenges on separation of Church and State grounds.
Why is this program needed?
There are academic, practical and spiritual benefits to Bible education. From an entirely secular viewpoint there are academic benefits. In today’s highly secular culture students can make it to adulthood having never read the stories of the Bible that form so much of the language of western civilization, history, literature and philosophy. Studies show students with biblical literacy do better academically. In a culture in which addiction problems, depression and a lack of moral compass leaves many young people adrift, an exposure to Biblical knowledge and encouragement can help many students. Biblical study lets the student be aware that they have value and there is a spiritual hope that they can continue to explore long after their Intro to the Bible class has concluded.
Is this a brand new idea unique to your organization?
No, there are hundreds of these around the country teaching thousands of students everyday. In northeast Georgia there are active programs in White, Gilmer, and Fannin Counties. The Fannin County Christian Learning Center has been in operation more than 20 years and has taught more than 3000 students.
Aren't there many views and interpretations of the Bible, who's vew are you teaching?
Our goal is to expose the students to the broad themes and central stories of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation and to avoid the fine distinctions that have historically divided denominations. We will affirm the basic doctrines that have historically defined the Christian faith generally. See our statement of Faith. Our goal is to be non-denominational and non-political. The Fannin Christian learning center has graciously given us access to their curriculum for our teachers to adapt to their teaching style.
Is this sponsored by a church?
Our board has members from several churches and several churches are providing financial support but no one church or denomination controls this ministry. It is guided solely by our board under precepts of the Bible and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. This is intentional so that any student and their family will be comfortable attending theses classes regardless of denominational background. Students will not be directed to any particular church.
How is Appalachian CLC funded?
The program can receive no government funding and is entirely funded by generous donations from individuals, organizations, businesses and churches. We are a tax exempt 501(c)(3) non-profit. Our board and local county teams are entirely non-paid volunteers. We pay teachers and bus drivers as needed because it requires a five day a week commitment. See our donation page if you would like to give and our volunteer page to volunteer.
Public school students attend the program absolutely free!
